More “Yes,” Less “No”

I find it pretty easy to say “no” to certain things.  If I don’t want to go to a friend’s dinner party at an expensive restaurant with snobby obnoxious attendees, I find a way to get out of it.  If I don’t want to sign up for a store’s credit card (even though I can save up to 5% on my next purchase!) I thank the cashier and refuse the offer.  If I get asked on a date by a toothless crackhead that reaks of his own urine, I say “no thank you” and continue on with my day.  Saying “no” has always been a strong suit for me. But sometimes I worry that I refuse too many offers.  I have gotten so used to declining things that I sometimes miss out on opportunities.  That’s why I wanted to focus in on saying “yes.”

No, I haven’t been watching Jim Carrey’s “Yes Man” a lot lately, I simply had a small awakening to one of my many flaws.  I don’t want you to start saying “yes” to every offer you get (although the date with the toothless crackhead could be interesting…) but I want you to say it more. And I want myself to start saying it more! So here are few instances that you should ditch your “no” response and replace it with a “yes!”:

  • Your new coworker invites you to her BBQ this weekend.  You’re dieting but all they’ll be cooking up is hotdogs and sloppy joes and you don’t want to ruin your newly svelt figure or look like an uptight diva if you don’t eat the entrees.   Say yes! Go to the BBQ and eat like a normal person. One bad meal isn’t going to ruin your diet forever.
  • You get asked to be the speaker at a local gardening club (because you are, of course, an awesome gardener). You’re scared of public speaking and you don’t think that you’re very intersting…Say yes! Face your fear and talk to the club. You’ll feel accomplished once you’ve finished. And don’t worry about not being interesting because these people invited you to speak for a reason!
  • You’re in China for a business trip and a plate of snake eyeballs is brought to your table (a real delicacy…actually I have no idea but let’s just pretend for a minute). Accept the challenge and try it. Maybe you will love snake eyeballs and want to eat them all the time.

Life is too short to say “no” all the time.  Try saying “yes” a little more often and see how you feel.  Leave me your comments below to let me know how it goes for you!

Have a beautiful “yes” day :)
